The Craft of Interviewing By: Gabe
Under: InterviewIs interviewing more of an art or a science?
An art is a process whose rules develop as part of the act, while science is a process whose rules are fixed from the start. I think interviewing is both. Part of interviewing is testing out responses and reacting in real-time to your interlocutor, and part of interviewing is understanding the basic principles that drive the interview. In this way, interviewing is a craft — half art, half science — though you have to learn the science before you can flirt with the art.
The FD/Veridical partners just wrapped up interviews for our new group of Business Analysts, and we have a lot to say on what makes a great interview. Jun, Yu-kai and I have been through hundreds of interviews, and we’ve given a good number of them, so we have a strong pulse on what makes a great candidate from a good one. We’ve been reducing the techniques of a powerful interview down to a science, and Jun and I are spoke at UCLA last night at a Bruin Consulting event on this topic for students going through interviews.
Here we’ll be posting tips on how to master your interviews. These are secrets no one has shared — original and tested strategies that work. Check back frequently for updates, readers: This is the stuff that gets you jobs.
